    Explore the many dimensions of inland lakes including riparian rights, shorelines, ecology, aquatic plants, and citizen involvement and much more through the online program Introduction to Lakes. There are no prerequisites - just a passion for Michigan’s 11,000 inland lakes! Topics covered include: Lake ecology Lakes and their watersheds Lakes and their shorelines Michigan water law Aquatic plant management Citizen involvement in lake management. Students have week-by-week, 24/7 access to six online units complete with captioned video lectures, web-based activities, discussion forums, three biweekly live webinars, and quizzes.   2. Wine Grape Vineyard Establishment Conference registration open

    Michigan State University Extension is offering a hybrid webinar-live workshop broadcast at two locations (Benton Harbor & Traverse City) simultaneously for those interested in starting a wine grape vineyard in Michigan. Established and emerging fruit growers; agribusiness and agency partners should attend.   3. Northwest Michigan Orchard and Vineyard Show

    January 16, 2018, 8:00 AM - January 17, 2018, 5:00 PM @ Grand Traverse Resort

    The exhibit hall will be open during the show to feature vendors of orchard and vineyard equipment and supplies, commodity organizations and other exhibitors. Both Tuesday and Wednesday will offer a variety of topics relating to research and information on tart cherries, sweet cherries, apples, wine grapes, berry crops and saskatoons, addressing both production and marketing. The Fruit Industry Luncheon will be held on Tuesday; Wednesday’s general sessions will open with the annual meeting of the Cherry Marketing Institute, followed by their luncheon, which is free to cherry growers if they pre-register with Cherry Marketing Institute by phone 517-669-4264 or by email at jgordon@usacherries.com. The program is co-sponsored by the Grand Traverse Fruit Growers’ Council, MSU Extension & AgBioResearch, Cherry Marketing Institute, Parallel 45 and the MSU Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Center.

  4. Produce Grower Safety Certification Course

    January 18, 2018, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM @ Northwestern Michigan College

    Michigan State University Extension will host the Food and Drug Administration-defined Produce Safety Alliance Grower Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) certification course in Traverse City, and other various locations. Those interested in learning about Good Agricultural Practices (GAP's), produce safety, co-management, and the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety Rule are invited to participate. The following required modules will be included: Introduction to Produce Safety; Worker Health, Hygiene, and Training; Soil Amendments; Wildlife, Domestic Animals, and Land Use; Agricultural Water Postharvest Handling and Sanitation; How to Develop a Farm Food Safety Plan At least one supervisor from the farm must complete the food safety training at least equivalent to the standardized curriculum recognized by FDA.
